A public health system that has yet to prove itself
While the specialized care mentioned above has made good progress in the quality of services, public health still brings little satisfaction to patients, with limited access to primary care and very long delays in some hospitals.
The social security system in Turkey is called Sosyal Guvenlik Kurumu (SGK). It provides access to universal, contribution-based health insurance that provides health coverage for the entire population.
Eligibility
As an expatriate or student, you must be covered by health insurance in Turkey, in order to obtain a residence or work permit. These conditions met, you will be able to benefit from public health insurance. It is your employer who is required to register you with social security. Without a job, you will be eligible for SGK if you have been legally resident in Turkey for at least 12 months. You will need to apply for it yourself. Coverage
The care that is funded and reimbursed by universal health insurance is the following:
- Outpatient and inpatient health care
- Maternity care and method of medically assisted procreation
- Accidents at work and occupational diseases
- Orthodontics for children under 18 and general dental treatments
The following treatments are not covered:
- Dental treatments and aesthetic health care
- Aesthetic surgery
- Health care for chronic diseases
