Ready to set sail for ‘the Switzerland of Central America’? Nestled between Nicaragua and Panama, Costa Rica expatriates from around the world. If you are dreaming of peaceful surroundings, lush vegetation, and a superb quality of life then Costa Rica is the place to be. And that’s not all: the country’s healthcare system is internationally recognised for its quality of services and the modernity of its medical facilities.

Want to know more? Foyer Global Health offers a brief overview of healthcare in Costa Rica and explains why your best bet as an expat is private international health insurance whether in Central America or anywhere else in the world.

Public health insurance system in Costa Rica: universality and accessibility to all residents

La Caja (Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social – CCSS) is the universal health insurance system run by the Costa Rican government. Established in 1940, it ensures free access to all public medical services for all citizens and residents (including expatriates). In fact, if you intend to apply for residence status in Costa Rica, you will be required to join the Caja.

The CCSS is supported by financial contributions from its members including employers and state funding. Expatriates can benefit from free medical consultations and hospital care provided in public health facilities, including some 40 public hospitals and more than 250 clinics throughout Costa Rica.

The Caja also offers very good coverage for dental and eye care, prescription drugs, including alternative medicine (physiotherapy) and mental health services in the public sector.

Healthcare in Costa Rica: excellence, modernity, and accessibility

Costa Rica regularly ranks as one of the best healthcare systems in the world and is undoubtedly one of the top ones in Latin America.

And for good reason: the country is home to a network of very well-equipped and modern medical establishments both public and private. The staff, often bilingual Spanish/English in private medical facilities, is highly qualified and quality care is affordable. These factors explain why Costa Rica has become a popular destination for medical tourism and welcomes thousands of foreigners every year, mainly North Americans.

The country offers excellent dental care (implants, oral aesthetics, orthodontics, etc.) at reasonable prices.

Costa Rica’s healthcare system has also been praised around the world for its effective management of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Why should you opt for private health insurance as an expat in Costa Rica?

Public health facilities suffer from the same shortcomings as most public medical services around the world, including long waiting times and labour shortage. Subscribing to a good private health policy will allow you to access private healthcare services that are not covered by the CCSS and that are much more expensive than in the public sector although still more affordable than in many other countries including the USA.

In the private sector, medical care is of a higher standard than in the public sector: the facilities are equipped with modern equipment, the staff is highly qualified (often English-speaking) and the focus on efficiency is much higher than in the public sector.

The three most prestigious private hospitals are: CIMA Hospital in Escazu, La Clinica Biblica in San José and Clinica La Catolica de Guadalupe in San José.

In case of emergency (hospitalisation, repatriation) or chronic illness, it is strongly recommended that you choose a private international insurance policy specifically tailored to your expat needs.

Although permitted to access Costa Rica’s public health insurance system, many expatriates opt for international health insurance to safeguard their security and peace of mind.
