Frequently Asked Questions by our expatriate members

  • How does international health insurance work?

International health insurance is medical coverage designed to protect anyone expatriating or living abroad. It offers you peace of mind wherever you go, ensuring that unexpected health issues don’t disrupt your journey abroad. You can benefit from the best medical care without worrying about the costs involved.

Healthcare systems vary from country to country in terms of quality, coverage, costs and access to care. The healthcare services in the country to which you are planning to expatriate may be very different from those in your current country, with a marked difference between public and private healthcare services.

If you are relocating for work, your employer may provide private medical coverage. But for all other situations, whether you’re moving solo, with family, or starting a new chapter abroad, international health insurance is essential to protect your health and wellbeing. Explore Journey, our coverage tailored for all the global citizens like you, and find the plan that fits your lifestyle and needs.

  • What is a first euro health insurance?

We offer private international health insurance with first euro coverage. This means your medical expenses are reimbursed starting from the very first euro spent, as long as you opt for plan with no deductible.

Whether you’re living abroad or frequently relocating, this type of coverage ensures you have direct access to care without the complexity of multiple systems. You’ll benefit from one single point of contact for all your reimbursement requests, so you can stay covered and move freely.

  • What are the benefits of an international health insurance?

The perks of an international health insurance are the flexibility and the convenience of having a comprehensive worldwide coverage. You can ask for a customised plan that will cover many different countries, so you can travel out of your new residence country without limit. You are not only covered for emergency, evacuation and repatriation, but also for regular check-ups and day-to-day medical expenses. For all these reasons, expat health insurance is the best solution for an expat and his family.

Global Health offers flexible plans with various deductible and copayment options to match your needs. Our highest-tier plans include unlimited annual coverage, giving you full peace of mind for serious health issues, anywhere in the world.

  • Why an international health insurance is not a travel Insurance?

International health insurance, also referred to as International Private Medical Insurance (IPMI), is intended for people who are going to live abroad for several months or years. If you plan an expatriation of over 3 months, then worldwide health insurance is a must. It is meant for expats, students, globetrotters, families going abroad on a sabbatical, etc. In a nutshell, it is designed for anyone planning to live abroad for a mid‑ to long‑term duration.

Travel insurance is designed for short stay only, usually less than three months, and primarily for people going for a holiday, for sightseeing or visiting family and friends abroad. It is not suited for individuals or families who are planning to reside abroad for many months as the cover is usually far more limited.

  • What countries are covered by an international health insurance?

An international health insurance policy is designed to cover you both in your home country and abroad. It gives you access to care in hospitals, clinics, and with doctors closest to you, regardless of your destination. Your health cover is therefore international. However, if you are travelling to a country under international sanctions, we reserve the right to carry out additional checks (for example, on banking). To find out whether your destination is on the list of sanctioned countries, please contact our experts.
